Teen chat: safer rooms for younger members

Orbit is open to people aged 13 and over. A large share of any chat platform's members are teenagers, and pretending otherwise helps nobody — so this page sets out plainly what we expect, what protections exist, and what a teenager should and should not do here.

It is written for teenagers, and it is also written so a parent reading over a shoulder knows exactly what they are looking at.

The age rule and why it exists

You must be at least 13 to use Orbit, and in some countries the minimum is higher — our terms of service set out the details. Accounts we find belonging to younger children are removed.

The rule exists because chat with strangers requires judgement that is genuinely hard below a certain age, and because data protection law treats younger children differently for good reason.

Things never to share, at any age

This list is short, absolute, and worth memorising.

Your school name, your address, or the area you live in.
Your phone number — including 'just so we can move to another app'.
Photos of yourself in school uniform, or anything showing your street.
Any image you would not want a classmate, a parent or a stranger to have forever.
Passwords, one-time codes, or account details, to anyone, ever.

Adults who behave badly with younger members

Any adult who asks a minor for photos, pushes to move to a private app, offers money or gifts, or turns a conversation sexual is committing a serious offence. Do not negotiate, do not warn them, do not give them a second chance. Block, then report, and tell an adult you trust.

We remove and ban accounts for this immediately, and we treat reports of it as the highest priority thing in our queue.

For parents

Orbit is a group chat platform with public and private rooms. There is no random video chat. Members choose a username rather than using a real name, and every member can block and report others. Group owners can remove members from their rooms.

The most useful thing a parent can do is not surveillance but conversation: ask which rooms your teenager is in and what they like about them. Our online safety guide in the Help Center is written to be read together.
