Fixing audio quality issues in voice rooms
Last updated
Choppy or unclear audio in a voice room is usually down to your connection or device settings rather than the room itself.
Check your connection first
Voice rooms need a stable internet connection to sound smooth. Switching from mobile data to Wi-Fi, or moving closer to your router, resolves most choppy-audio issues.
Common causes of poor audio
Background apps using bandwidth, a weak signal, or an older device struggling with real-time audio processing can all degrade quality. Multiple people speaking on unstable connections at once tends to make the problem more noticeable.
- Weak or unstable internet connection
- Other apps or downloads competing for bandwidth
- Microphone too close, causing distortion
- Browser tab left open a long time without a refresh
Dealing with echo
Echo usually happens when someone is on speaker with the volume high enough for their own mic to pick it back up. Suggest they use headphones or lower their speaker volume rather than muting the whole room.
When to refresh or rejoin
If audio quality doesn't improve, leaving the voice room and rejoining resets your connection to it and often clears up lingering issues without affecting your group membership at all.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does my own voice sound delayed to me?
- A slight delay is normal for real-time audio; a large or growing delay usually points to a slow connection rather than an app problem.
- Does using the app installed as a PWA improve audio quality?
- It can feel smoother than a browser tab with many others open, since a dedicated app window has fewer competing processes.
- Can too many people speaking at once cause quality drops?
- Yes, especially if several participants are on weak connections simultaneously, which can make the overall room sound choppier.
