The basics of direct messages on Orbit

Last updated

Alongside group chats, Orbit supports one-to-one direct messages for private conversations outside a shared group.

Starting a direct message

Open someone's profile and use the message option to start a private conversation. If you already share a group, you can usually start from their name in chat as well.

What carries over from groups

Direct messages support most of the same features as group chat: replies, reactions, media, voice notes, GIFs and link previews all work the same way in a one-to-one conversation.

  • Swipe-to-reply and long-press to copy
  • Read receipts
  • Photos, videos and voice notes

What is different

There are no @mentions or @everyone in a direct message since there is only one other person, and there is no group owner or member list to manage.

If someone is bothering you

You can block a user directly from a direct message thread, which stops them from messaging you again and hides your profile from them. See our article on blocking for the full details.
